The smaller version was characterized by bore and stroke measurements of 84x67.6 mm, for a total displacement of 2997 cm³. The compression ratio was 10.5: 1. The maximum deliverable power was 218 hp at 5800 rpm, while the maximum torque reached 290 Nm at 4500 rpm. This engine was mounted on: BMW 530i E34 ( 1992 - 96 ); BMW 730i / 730iL E32 (1992- 94 ); BMW 730i / 730iL E38 (1994-96).

M60B40

This engine was born by re-boring and lengthening the stroke of the 3-liter unit. Its bore and stroke measurements were in fact 89x80 mm, for a total displacement of 3982 cc. The compression ratio was instead 10.0: 1, therefore slightly lower than that of the 3-liter from which it derives. Peak power was 286 hp at 5800 rpm, with peak torque of 400 N m at 5100 rpm. It was mounted on: BMW 540i E34 sedan and Touring (1992-96); BMW 740i / 740iL E32 (1992-94); BMW 740i / 740iL E38 (1994-96); BMW 840i E31 ( 1993 -96).
