This engine replaced the previous M70 unit, also split into 12 V- cylinders.

However, there were notable differences with the previous unit, since first of all the construction technology changed, which uses electrochemically treated alusil for the monobloc, in order to obtain silicon barrels. The two heads are in aluminum alloy.

The bore and stroke measurements also change, 85×79 mm. The overall displacement is thus increased to 5379 cm³. The electronic control unit is also different, again a Bosch, but this time a Motronic M5.2 instead of the previous LH-Jetronic. In some versions, however, there were two control units, one per bank.
