    About The K-Series  Engine

    The K series motors are four-cylinder engines produced by the Honda Corporation and operating on a four-stroke Otto cycle. Available in 2.0 and 2.4-liter versions, as well as turbocharged 2.3L. The most advanced and high-performance series-produced internal combustion engines of the Honda brand. All motors in this series are equipped with the DOHC i-VTEC system, as well as VTC. However, one can implement the VTEC system both on both shafts (powerful versions that require high-octane fuel) and only on the intake shaft (budget versions; in this case, the exhaust shaft is classic).

    How does VTEC work? In a normal engine, the cam profile is always switching from low lift at idle to high lift at higher RPM. When the system switches from one cam lobe to another depends on their profiles and also load of the engine. In a VTEC engine Honda uses a different approach: instead of changing camshafts continuously, it uses two profiles with different characteristics per cylinder - each working only in a certain part of the RPM range. The valves for intake and exhaust are still operated by single cam profiles but they use two different profiles at any given time! At low RPM all four cylinders run on smaller lobes that maximise torque production. At around 3500RPM an internal oil control valve switches one cylinder to another, larger cam lobe which offers better top end power.
