What’s more important torque or horsepower?

It used to be thought that the more horsepower, the higher the speed and power of the car. However, do not forget that there is a torque element that affects the operation of the engine. It is torque that allows you to spin the motor to achieve the required power.

Features of the torque element and horsepower

First of all, it’s worth noting that an engine’s power is the energy it generates. And it is the rotating element in the motor shaft that allows it to be worked out. From this, the torque element propels the car forward, and the power is the energy that it produces.

The twisting element affects:

  • the speed at which the engine revs up;
  • car acceleration.

It is also worth considering the time it takes for the torque element for the engine to develop the required power. Cars with large torque elements need the least time.

It is the maximum power of this part that affects what maximum speed the car can develop. That is, the more horsepower, the higher the speed. However, the development time of the maximum engine power depends on the torque element.

But You should bear in mind that this applies only to internal combustion engines. The opposite is true for electric and steam versions: a small torque element develops a high vehicle power. This is the reason for the popularity of hybrid cars. If there is not enough power from the internal combustion engine, the electric motor starts its work.

What types of transport have a powerful torque element?

The dimensions of the twisting element are not the main thing. It is important how many revolutions it can make. The most powerful options are installed on diesel engines and tractors. Such a motor develops 1,500 rpm, which provides enough horsepower to operate heavy equipment.

Gasoline engines do not run on large torque elements. Average speed 7000-8000 rpm. It is these indicators that make it possible to develop the maximum transport speed.
